World Environment Day was celebrated in Chennai Petroleum
Corporation Limited (CPCL) on June 5. As part of the celebrations,
CPCL has commissioned a DeNOx facility at its Manali Refinery,
the first of its kind in India, to minimize the overall Nitrous
Oxide ( NOx ) emissions to atmosphere. The facility, developed
by Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE), based
on a proprietory kinetic model and executed by CPCL at a cost
of about Rs.11 crore was inaugurated by Mr.K.K.Acharya, Managing
Director, CPCL, at the Manali Refinery Complex today (05.06.2006).
With this facility, the initial NOx levels of 300 to 325 ppm
(parts per million) are reduced to 80 ppm to 130 ppm depending
upon the feed quality of the fuel oil. Thus, NOx emissions
to atmosphere is reduced by 3 to 4 times utilising this facility.
As part of World Environment Day, CPCL organised a number
of programmes to create awareness on the theme of the year
namely “Deserts and Desertification” and the slogan
“Don’t Desert Drylands”. A Goodwill run
by the students of CPCL Polytechnic was flagged off by Mr.K.K.Acharya,
Managing Director, who also inaugurated an Environment Exhibition
at Manali Refinery, followed by planting of trees by the students.
Prizes were also distributed for the winners of the various
competitions held in connection with World Environment Day.
Mr.N.C.Sridharan, Director (Finance), and senior officials
of CPCL and a large number of employees were present on the
occasion.
