Chennai Petroleum Corporation
Limited (CPCL) and Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital are organizing
a series of three Free Eye Care Camps (Cataract Detection &
Treatment) for the people residing in and around Manali neighbourhood.

Mr.
S.Rammohan, Chairman and Managing Director, CPCL, inaugurated
the programme at a function at Manali this morning (27.01.02).
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Rammohan stated that during the
last financial year CPCL spent more than Rs.50 lakhs towards
social welfare schemes.He also mentioned that CPCL was planning
to start an Engineering College at Manali for the benefit of
the students in the neighbourhood. It may be noted that CPCL
was the first Oil Sector Company in the country to establish
a full-time Polytechnic and an ITI within its campus at Manali.
Presiding over the function,
Dr.S.S.Badrinath, President and Chairman, Sankara Nethralaya,
commended CPCL for undertaking community welfare measures for
the development of the people living in and around Manali area.
He also said that during last year, Sankara Nethralaya performed
nearly 10,000 operations free of cost for the poor people, which
accounts for nearly 44% of the total operations held at the
hospital.
In his special address, Mr.K.Narayanan,
Director (Operations), CPCL, called upon the people in the areas
to make use of this opportunity by attending in large numbers
and getting their eyes tested by specialists.
At the outset, Dr.V.Swaminathan,
Chief Medical Officer, CPCL, welcomed the gathering. Mr.R.Gnanasekar,
Chairman, Manali Town Panchayat, Mr.M.Kulothungan, Chairman,
Chinna Sekkadu Town Panchayat and Mr.V.Chandrasekaran, President,
Manali Grama Seva Sangam, felicitated. Mr.V.Jayabalan, Senior
Officer (Community Services), CPCL, proposed a vote of thanks.
In three eye care programmes,
CPCL expects to screen more than 1,000 patients and cataract
operations would be performed for selected patients at Sankara
Nethralaya. The entire cost of surgery, medicines, food accommodation
and transport facilities would be provided to the patients free
of cost.
Earlier, Mr.Rammohan, dedicated
the compound wall constructed by CPCL at a cost of Rs.10 lakhs
for Dr.Ambedkar Playground, Manali.
