The Once-through Hydro Cracker
Unit (OHCU) and other related facilities, which form part of
the 3 million metric tonnes per annum (mmtpa) Expansion-cum-Modernisation
Project of Manali Refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation
Limited, have been commissioned on 4.8.2004. The other units
such as Crude Distillation Unit, Vacuum Distillation Unit, Catalytic
Reforming Unit, etc. and associated facilities of the above
project had been commissioned on 31.3.2004. The total cost of
the completed project would be within the approved project cost
of Rs.2,360 crore.
The commissioning of the OHCU is a significant
milestone to CPCL as this is a key secondary processing unit
implemented by CPCL as a part of its 3 million tonne Expansion-cum-Modernisation
Project. The technology for this unit has been provided by M/s.Chevron
Lummus Global (CLG) of USA and the engineering and construction
supervision was done by M/s.Engineers India Limited, New Delhi.
The unit, with a capacity of 1.65 mmtpa, is designed to process
high sulphur vacuum gas oils from the existing and new refinery
units including the Visbreaker vacuum gas oils.
With the commissioning of the OHCU,
CPCL will have the advantage of processing wide range of crudes,
thus providing sufficient flexibility to its operations. The
distillate yields is expected to increase by about 6%. Moreover,
the superior quality of products from this unit would also enable
CPCL to meet the Auto Fuel quality norms of Bharat Stage-II
and Euro-III equivalent, much ahead of the scheduled implementation
date of April 2005.
